Cultural Views

A value that could be observed and modified within American culture is the non-questioning nature towards authority figures even when approached with controversial actions made by these figures. An example of this seen are the GRATS and Operation Hammer projects by police within the LAPD. As well, these actions are seen with Proposition 9066 and the internment of Japanese-American citizens through FDR's approval of this proposition without proper reason even during the protests against the Holocaust. Although, holding authority as a value is important, realizing when authority is abusing its power is also important.

  1. How can society go about correcting this issue? Does police brutality still exist today or has it disappeared with time and become something of the past?

  2. Society can improve this issue by having politicians and government officials address this issue. This can be done through petitions as well as by addressing the issue. As well, action can be taken by having more objectivity within juror results. Police brutality still exists today and has yet to disappear. However, because of media representations, police brutality is less prevalent due to cautionary measurements.

    1. In general, the idea of authority and power struggles I feel dominates Los Angeles culture. Authority means power, and in this sense, many authority figures use this power unjustly. This can apply to police brutality or the LA Gang Wars.
